Storey Racing riders have announced their return to competition in 2021 with a huge bang as Beth Morrow and Lucy Gadd dominated the elite women’s field at the recent Loughborough cycling festival. Cat Ferguson was equally impressive in the Youth A race to take victory also.

Held over around 70 minutes of racing on a challenging circuit inside the university campus, the Storey Racing team also included Sarah Storey and Erin Avill.

Racing first in the elite race, Morrow, Gadd, Storey and Avill were part of a 70 strong field on the tight technical circuit and also came out with best team on the day too.

Within 15 minutes of racing clear splits had formed in the field, with both Beth and Lucy dictating proceedings in a front group of 6 riders. The chase group of 9 made little progress and a few seconds further back, Sarah spent the racing chasing after being caught up in earlier congestion around some of the corners.

As the race approached the final laps, Beth and Lucy were ready for an attack and counter attack scenario, but only one was needed and Beth went clear. Lucy covered moves behind before lining herself up for the sprint. Crossing the line solo, Beth marked her team debut in fine style, whilst Lucy ably won the sprint for second to complete an impressive 1-2 for the team. Sarah and Erin 17th and 24th respectively completed the team which took top spot on the day also.

Within a couple of hours of the elite women’s victory, Cat Ferguson started her assault on the course and was of course well marked by other riders having had such a sensational start to the year in both cyclo-cross, MTB and track racing.

Biding her time and being patient certainly paid off and after a flurry of early attacks, Cat fully committed on the climb at around half distance and took only one rider with her. Doing the lion’s share of the work, Cat worked well with her breakaway companion to build up a commanding lead before having to negotiate the lapped riders whilst at the same time sprinting for the win.

Staying calm, she chose the right hand side of the road and was able to finish with victory to top off an exciting day of racing for the team.

Speaking after the race, DS Barney Storey said, “It was superb to have the team together this weekend and to take victory in both the elite women and Youth A events tops it off very well.”

“The team have been working hard on local events and staying in contact through online rides and social media, so to bring everyone together and get on so well really is a wonderful confidence boost. There’s a lot more racing to look forward to now and I am sure this will have set us up well.”
