After two incredibly successful seasons in Storey Racing colours, former Irish National Time Trial Champion, Kelly Murphy will be making the move to the UCI peloton for the 2021 season.
Kelly first joined the Storey Racing set-up back in 2016 to race her first year as a road rider in the Boot Out Breast Cancer Scholarship Programme. After her first season on the road in 2016 she was selected for the Irish National Track team and has since competed at the World Championships on both track and road.
Kelly’s time with Storey Racing has been hugely successful, including two National Time Trial titles and an incredible performance at the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire, where on stage 1 she was in a stage long breakaway which helped define the race.
Whether it’s a long time trial, short crit or track event, Kelly has always thrown her heart and soul in to racing and has been an inspiring role model for the whole team. Speaking of her time with the squad Kelly said, “I very much cherish my time at Storey Racing, I was invited into the team with little to no experience of bike racing and over the years it has been a homely environment for me to explore the sport.”
“I have been fortunate enough to have raced all manner of prestigious events in Storey colours, from Tour de Yorkshire to Tour Series and National and International Time Trial events. Some played to my strengths and some didn’t but there was never any pressure to produce results. This approach allowed me to enjoy the racing for what it is and so grow sustainably in my own time.”
“It is because of their development ethos I am still riding a bike today with the flourishing opportunities I have. I very much thank them for this and wish the team all the best for 2021.”
Supporting riders to develop and further their own ambitions of racing, has always been a central objective to the Storey Racing programme and alongside the #BestVersionOfYou ethos, the team prides itself on giving riders an holistic approach during the course of their membership.
Team owner and captain, Dame Sarah Storey remembers well her first meeting with Kelly, saying, “Kelly was clearly a very motivated and driven individual when we first chatted about the opportunity for her to join our programme and explore the world of bike racing.”
“I was so impressed that her main focus was to see how far she could push herself and her values really aligned with what we wanted to provide for our riders. Over the course of her time with the team, Kelly has played an integral part in living our #BestVersionOfYou ethos, and she has always been a delight to watch race and spend time with off the bike.”
“Seeing her take the step in to the UCI peloton and continue her career on the Cycling Ireland National Team is a very exciting time and the whole team will be eagerly watching to see her future success.”
As the team celebrates the success of Kelly’s move, there is also exciting news of new team members to announce and in the coming week we will be sharing more about the team roster in 2021.
